Hellebores catching the early March sunshine in the garden

March always seems to be the point when the garden suddenly starts asking a lot from you all at once. There’s still winter tidying to finish, roses to prune, weeds to get on top of and then, at the same time, all the seed sowing starts to ramp up too.

We had one of those glorious early March Saturdays last weekend and I spent pretty much the whole day outside. I got stuck into clearing, pruning, tidying and weeding, and it felt so good to make a proper start. I’m especially glad I’ve managed to get ahead with some of the weeding because I really want to get some mulch around the roses over the next few weeks.

March is definitely one of the busiest gardening months for me, but the lighter evenings make such a difference. Even if I can only get outside for an hour after work, it helps me keep things moving and stops the jobs list feeling completely overwhelming.

I’ve also been juggling all the different stages of seed sowing without a greenhouse, which is always a bit of a puzzle at this time of year. Seedlings end up all over the place here: on the garden table to harden off, tucked into the cold frame, and then brought back under cover again if there’s a cold night forecast. It isn’t glamorous, but it does work.

So that’s where I am this week: trying to keep on top of all the March jobs while also making room for everything that needs growing on. It feels busy, but in the nicest possible way, and after a bit of sunshine I’m more than ready for the season ahead.
