Taking the wall down and making space for the dahlias

Mid-July has brought with it one of those jobs that feels far bigger than it sounds. We finally took the wall down in the garden and instantly the space felt different, with more room and more possibility.

I am always drawn to the planting side of things, but I do love it when a practical change makes the whole garden work better. It feels a bit like a mini reset in the middle of summer.

The dahlias are starting to come into their own now, which is always exciting, even if other things like the zinnias are being far less cooperative than I would like.

Add lilies opening and the general lushness of July, and it feels as though the garden is moving into that slightly wilder, fuller stage I look forward to every year.
